As per Google, clothing is used to cover body, protect our
skin from pollution and ultraviolet-rays and provide us modesty. It provides
insulation against hot and cold conditions, it’s a hygienic barrier against
infectious and toxic materials.
Whereas clothing performs a range of
social and cultural functions, such as individual, occupational and gender differentiation,
and social status. In most of societies, norms about clothing reflect standards
of modesty, depending upon religion, gender and social status. Clothing differs
from culture to culture, even within a country province to province depending
upon weather conditions and traditions. The styles reveal much about the customs
and beliefs of a group of people as their culture that depict their values,
skills and traditions.
As clothing reflects different standards of modesty in different
cultures. The concept of modesty and shame differs too for every culture. In some
countries modesty is, wearing head to ankles dress that could only reveal face,
hands and feet but in some even hands, feet and face should also not be
revealed in front of opposite gender. But one same planet “earth” we see in
some countries they have tradition of wearing revealing cloths regardless of
cold weather, because they think that the one wearing full body covering cloths
might have some issue with his or her body they probably want to hide. In some traditions
modesty is just wearing a string of beads on their waists and just covering
private parts. In some tribes, we see metal bangles on their neck to increase height
of neck is part of their clothing and one who doesn’t wear those metal bangles
on necks faces swear criticism from other people of the tribe and at times they
are even asked to leave the tribe.
We must have heard the very famous phrase “when in Rome, do
as the Romans do”, means adapt the trends and traditions of the place you visit
and let the people there know you honor their customs.
